The Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) has announced a historic month for the production and export of light vehicles in Mexico. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), August 2024 registered 352,615 units produced, the highest number for an August month in the last six years, representing an 8.3% increase over 2023. In addition, in the first eight months of the year, cumulative production showed a 5.3 percent growth.
Exports also set a record, with 292,670 units exported in August, representing an increase of 1.7% compared to the same month of the previous year. Between January and August 2024, the volume exported grew by 7.4%, consolidating Mexico as one of the main suppliers of light vehicles in international markets.
In terms of domestic sales, August 2024 was the best August in eight years, with 127,684 units sold, representing a growth of 11.9% compared to August 2023. Cumulative sales between January and August 2024 reached 962,870 units, an increase of 12.2% over the same period last year.
This sustained growth in production, exports and domestic sales reflects the strength of the Mexican automotive industry and its ability to maintain its expansion in a challenging global context. If this trend continues, the sector will approach historic levels by the end of 2024, marking a new boom period for the industry.
