Mexican exports to the U.S. break record in the first half of 2024

From January to June, Mexican exports to the United States grew 5.5% to 249,041 million dollars, which allowed them to gain a record market share of 15.9% of U.S. merchandise purchases in that period, surpassing the 15.5% it achieved in the first half of 2023, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The expansion of Mexico's sales to the neighboring economy was higher than the 3.1% increase in total U.S. imports and also occurred in the presence of declines in exports to the U.S. by its two main competitors in that market. Hence Mexico's market gain.

On the one hand, Canadian shipments fell 1.2% to 205.869 billion dollars, narrowing its share from 13.8% to 13.1%.

And on the other, Chinese exports fell 2.1% to $198.410 billion, bringing their market share down from 13.3 to 12.7 percent.

Both Canadian sales -mainly centered on primary goods- and Chinese sales -intensive in manufactured products and capital goods-, have been on the decline for two years.
