Mexico surpasses China in manufacturing exports to the United States as of 2023

Mexico surpassed China in manufacturing exports sent to the United States in 2023, driven by relocation (nearshoring) and with a favorable outlook, highlighted the consulting firm Kearney.

With an increasing trend, Mexico's share of total foreign manufacturing purchases in the United States rose from 13.8% in 2018 to 15.8% in 2023.

In contrast, the decline in China's coverage in this indicator reached 15.4% in 2023, from 24.3% in 2018.

This trend crossover is especially relevant for Kearney, as one of its recent surveys revealed that most companies are planning investments or undertaking new projects related to relocation.

Manufacturing imports to the U.S. from around the world totaled $2.676 trillion in 2023 and, taking into account the period from 2018 to 2023, Mexico gained 2 percentage points in its share of these purchases, while China lost 8.9 percentage points. "The expansion of manufacturing and warehousing space is particularly notable in areas near the U.S.-Mexico border, but the speed at which it is occurring is staggering," the consultancy said in the presentation of the Kearney Reshoring Index (KRI) 2024.
