ITALIAN ENTREPRENEURS PUMP UP THE EV INDUSTRY
In 1949, the Marzocchi brothers Stefano and Guglielmo left their posi- tions at Ducati to set up a company in their home cellar. Today, Marzocchi Pompe SpA is listed on the EGM market of the Milan Stock Exchange. It also employs about 270 people, enjoys a turnover of 40 million euros, and produces over one million gear pumps a year, of which some 600,000 are destined for the auto- motive sector. That sector is changing, however, and Marzocchi Pompe intends to change with it, remaining relevant
with the transition away from internal combustion engines. One example of this came during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, during which the company began working with an international producer of heavy vehicles to provide power steering pumps for a new line of fully electric vehicles. Similar EV opportunities have followed. “We are fortunate to produce pumps that will not die with the transition to electric power,” said CEO Gabriele Bonfiglioli. Website: www.marzocchipompe.com

ITALIAN GIGA PRESS IS CHANGING CAR MANUFACTURING
Automotive News Europe noted that Mercedes, Volvo, VW, and others are following in automaker Tesla’s footsteps by either adopting or evalu- ating the EV pio- neer’s use of the “Giga Press” from Travagliato, Italy- based machinery
builder Idra Srl. For example, Mercedes-Benz “used the one-part casting method to form the rear of the EQXX concept it debuted last February at the CES [Consumer Electronics Show] in Las Vegas.” By doing so, the article claimed, “a manufacturer saves about 40 percent of its tooling investment, consumes about 30 percent less energy, and generates a finished part that is 30 percent lighter than an all-steel solution and about 10 percent lighter than a solution that includes several parts in aluminum.”
