  DATA STRATEGIES
TM4 brand. With manufacturing locations in Italy, Canada, China, Germany, India, and the United Kingdom, Dana TM4 is supported by a global network of technology centers at key spots.
Dana, Inc. is a member of FEDERTEC (Cinisello Balsamo, Italy, www.federtec.it), the result of the merger earlier in 2019 of ASSIOT (the association for power transmission components producers) and ASSOFLUID (for fluid power equipment makers), and representing the Italian Industry of Mechatronic Technologies and Components for Fluid Power, Power Transmission, Smart Automation and Control of Industrial Products and Processes.

Converting data into actions is key to its utility. Dana’s Spicer Smart Suite platform captures, manages, analyzes, communicates, and acts on data sourced from the drivetrain. The Spicer Suite of- fers load monitoring, condition monitoring, tractive torque estimation, speed monitoring, and direct measurements of steering angles.
According to Dana, Spicer Smart Suite seamlessly integrates vehicle intelligence with Dana’s line of drivetrain components. This provides useful, actionable insights to end users on and off the ve- hicle, allowing critical alerts and analysis to be shared on vehicle cen- tral display panels, via tablets, and in fleet management centers. It is also designed to take these insights a step further by performing key functions independent of operator intervention.
Spicer Smart Suite technology is also fully integrated into com- ponent housings, delivering optimum packaging and ensuring that sensitive mechatronic sub-systems are fully protected from acci- dental damage and the impacts of typical operating environments. Passenger vehicles need to be just as rugged as commercial and off-road equipment.
“As the construction market becomes more competitive, equip- ment manufacturers and owners are pressed to drive greater ef- ficiencies,” said Aziz Aghili, president of Dana Off-Highway Drive- line Technologies. “Dana is actively developing a wide selection of leading-edge technologies, led by Spicer Smart Suite technology,

that can transform passive drivetrain components into intelligent, powerful forces for boosting performance.”
The source of Dana’s understanding and use of data from ve- hicles may be found deep underground. The company has for a long time supported autonomous vehicle operations in the mining indus- try. Operating environments in mining are often challenging—espe- cially underground—so it’s imperative to consistently harvest and an- alyze data from vehicles to ensure safety, reliability and performance.
Dana is also helping to advance vehicle electrification. “The con- struction market is moving quickly toward electrification,” Aghili said. In 2019, the company unveiled two demonstrator electric vehicles: a mid-sized mobile elevated work platform with an 18 m (59 ft) platform height and a 1.5 ton (3,000 lb) mini excavator.
