INDUSTRY Packaging sector migrates to electric machines

Traditionally, machines for the packaging industry have been hydraulic. However, industrialists have realized that migrating to the use of electric machinery brings benefits in terms of lower energy consumption, maintenance and increased production.

"Having recent generation machines increases production capacity because the previous machines were slower and were in maintenance for longer periods of time. Having new machines helps minimize maintenance costs by 50%, increases production time and, therefore, production capacity by 20%," said Luis Carvajal, Engineering Manager of Nypro Kanaak, a packaging manufacturing company.

According to the communications and electronics engineer from the University of Guadalajara, Nypro Kanaak of Jalisco decided to change its hydraulic machinery for 46% electric, also due to an environmental issue, as they consume up to 40% less energy.

It is estimated that traditional hydraulic machinery in the packaging sector is more economical. However, in the long term, they consume more energy and are more expensive to maintain, so "the initial investment for electric machinery is higher, but in the long run it is a benefit," said the engineer.

Electric machines also help to reduce the emission of hazardous waste such as oil and the cost of changing it, which can be 50,000 pesos.
