The United States continues to be a strong importer of packaging technology and machinery. Foreign suppliers meet about 30 percent of total demand, which reached a total value of $12.4 billion in 2020. The majority of packaging machinery in the U.S. is absorbed mainly by the food and beverage sectors, followed by pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Italy has been present in the U.S. market for years and maintains the second place among the main packaging machine supplier countries, with total sales of $541.1 million USD in 2020, and a share of nearly 18%. In the first 6 months of 2021, the sector saw a growth of 26.4 percent compared to the same period in 2020; Italy in particular saw a growth of 57.2 percent with a 22.0 percent share of total U.S. imports.
