Since machinery and capital goods technologies constitute an important element of Italy's total world exports, which exceed 20 percent each year, lCE-Agency through its Chicago and Houston offices actively tracks the number of major machinery sectors, monitoring imports from the United States. These sectors cover machinery and technology for the following uses: agriculture, ceramics, earthmoving and construction, Hydraulic, pneumatic and transmission components, food industry, footwear industry, leather processing and tanning industry, metallurgy/foundry, glass, marble and stone processing, metal processing; packaging and wrapping, plastic and rubber processing, printing and paper industry, textile, and wood processing.

U.S. imports of this group totaled about 14.1 billion euros in the first quarter of 2020, down annually (-10.04 percent) from 15.6 billion euros in 2019. Italy fell one place and is currently in sixth position compared to the same period in 2019 among foreign suppliers, and is second among EU countries, with imports of 874 million euros and a YOY (-5.24%). Despite the negative YOY numbers, the chart below shows that overall imports from Italy increased slightly by +0.32% with 6.24% in Q1 2020 compared to 5.92% in Q1 2019 and 5.30% in Q1 2018.

Italian suppliers of the main machinery sectors that make up this group recorded the following figures in the first quarter of 2020: Hydraulic, pneumatic, and transmission components with €238 million (-10.70%), packaging machinery with €113.5 million (-6.32%), printing and papermaking industry machinery with €87.5 million (+5.88%), and metalworking machinery with €82.5 million (+16.8).

The largest increase in value occurred in marble and stone machinery with €10.61 million in Q1 2020 compared to Q1 2019 with €2.97 million increase (+257.20%), followed by footwear, leather processing and tanning industry machinery with €3.15 million (+76.17), glass processing machinery with nearly €10 million (+18.7%).
