SILAO OPENS NEW TIRE PLANT

MEXICO CITY - Pirelli inaugurated with an initial investment of $200 million dollars its production plant of 3.5 million luxury tires per year in Silao, Guanajuato.

Marco Tronchetti Trovera, CEO of the company, said the total investment planned for this plant is $400 million dollars between 2015 and 2017.

The new factory will generate 1,000 direct and indirect jobs and within five years will be the largest in Latin America with a production of 5.5 million tires per year.

Regarding the destination of production, around 70% will be exported to the United States and Canada, while the rest will remain in Mexico.

Trochetti Trovera revealed that the Silao plant is more advanced than one recently inaugurated in Italy in terms of energy and water consumption, since between 2012 and 2015 alone it aims to save 70% of the liquid used in its production process.

During 2011 the country produced 20 million tires and this year the industry will grow between 5 and 10%, estimated Raúl Castillo Arteaga, president of the National Association of Tire Distributors and Renewable Plants (Andellac).

This growth will be due precisely to the production of tires from the new Silao plant.
