Machines Italia: Summer Edition (Vol. XIV) of Machines Italia Magazine 2022 Coping with the Certainty of Uncertain Times - Deadline for submission of materials is July 15, 2022!

ICE-Agency of Chicago, has entrusted SME - Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a major association of engineers and manufacturing professionals throughout North America as well as a publisher of magazines specializing in industrial technologies, with the task of developing the next edition of Machines Italia Magazine (henceforth also referred to as the magazine). The magazine is scheduled for distribution in September 2022, through Manufacturing Engineering (to 20,000 subscribers) and Smart Manufacturing Magazine (to 10,000 subscribers).

Machines Italia magazine will also be distributed electronically to approximately 255,000 executives and managers of U.S. manufacturing companies identified in SME databases.

The 2022 edition of the magazine, the fourteenth, will be titled Coping with the Certainty of Uncertain Times and aims to promote Italian machinery and technologies to North American manufacturing industries, focusing on excellence, the innovative content of made-in-Italy offerings, smart management of production resources and workforce, and overcoming operational challenges in automation and production processes.

In addition, the magazine will illustrate concrete cases of North American end-users successfully employing advanced technological tools provided by Italian companies in the various mechanical sectors covered by Ice's Machines Italia program.

All information and materials useful for the purposes of drafting the contents of the magazine must be included in the folders below by July 15, 2022. This deadline has been set to allow the SME editorial staff to evaluate the material, ask any questions and make any necessary revisions in time for publication. Publication of material received after the deadlines is not guaranteed.

ARTICLES

SME has pointed out that it is essential that companies cooperate in the collection of material to be used in the writing of articles and news items that will appear in the publication. In particular, SME is seeking materials and stories for articles on the topics listed below. For each theme, the relevant SME editors and journalists as well as the target industries are indicated. The choice to propose material on one topic rather than another can be arranged directly with SME by writing to the contact information given below. Correspondence and material must be in English. Finished articles will have an indicative length of 2,500 words and will contain material from multiple sources.

F1- Operator Training for a Resilient Workforce: Between staff turnover and supply chain issues, manufacturers need an agile workforce that can cope with issues and keep product lines running. Vendors of advanced equipment are a key element in any training program. Whether it's agricultural workers, stonecutters and masons, packaging line operators, or those who produce the world's processed foods, employers struggle to attract, train and retain people. In this feature, we examine how Italian manufacturers of advanced equipment are partnering with North American customers (and possibly training integrators) to develop, enhance, and create a resilient workforce.

Sectors:

  • Agricultural machinery

  • Automatic packaging and wrapping machines

  • Machines, plants, equipment for food production, processing and preservation

  • Machines for processing marble, granite and natural stone

F2-Robotics and Automation: Keeping Staff Engaged and Productive: Woodworking, ceramics manufacturing, fluid power equipment, and of course machining and fabricating shops-it seems that robots are popping up everywhere. The received wisdom of the past--that robots would replace people--is being replaced by the reality that robots and automation help retain workers. Relieved of the drudgery of tasks that can be dull and dirty, the right level of automation engages workers and improves job satisfaction. Today's agile robotic automation is a key to enhancing productivity, worker happiness while guarding against future obsolescence.

Sectors:

  • Ceramic processing machines

  • Machines for hydraulics and pneumatics

  • Woodworking Machines

F3-Smart Manufacturing Revolution: One of the major tools for manufacturers to react quickly to unexpected events is having a smart production line or factory able to respond rapidly. This feature examines how Italian providers of advanced manufacturing equipment in the machining, graphics, paper, ceramics, and other industries are providing data that is "Integration Ready" for smart manufacturing. From OPC-UA connectivity to advanced data integration strategies, Italian vendors are providing the means to plug into smart manufacturing. This feature could examine the use of Artificial Intelligence, manufacturing efficiency, data collection, and integration, or metrology.

Sectors:

  • Machinery for the printing, paper, converting, and related industries

  • Machinery, equipment, accessories and special products for glass processing

  • Machine tools, robots, automation and of products auxiliary to them (NC, tools, components, accessories).

F4-Flexible, Multi-Role Machinery: One of the best ways of coping with the uncertainty of demand and supply is having machinery that can quickly adapt from one product or part number to the next, or even quickly take on new work in record time. Italian producers of machinery for the textile industry, footwear and leather goods, and those making machined components such as gears and transmission parts have recognized the need for flexible machines, from five-axis machine tools to fully automated manufacturing systems. This feature article will include examples of such equipment, why it's important, ROI considerations, application advice, and customer success stories if available.

Sectors:

  • Footwear, leather goods and tannery machines

  • Machines for the textile industry

  • Manufacturers of transmission organs and gears

F5-The Impact of Additive Manufacturing in 2022 and Beyond: If any emerging manufacturing technology will be capable of dealing with uncertain, even chaotic, supply and demand, it might very well be additive manufacturing (AM), more commonly known as 3D printing. From plastic injection molding and casting patterns to replacement parts for machinery and heavy equipment, AM promises to fundamentally change how manufacturers deliver products. This article will explore which of these technologies are being used and why, considerations when designing parts for 3D printing, benefits vs. ROI, application advice, and reasons why AM helps overcome supply chain obstacles.

Sectors:

  • Plastic and rubber machinery, equipment and molds

  • Foundry machinery and products

  • Construction machinery

NEWS BRIEF

The News Brief section of the magazine will highlight stories related to Italian companies that have invested or will invest in North America. Companies are asked to submit and/or have submitted information (including press releases and byline articles) regarding new plants, products, offices, locations, installations as well as partnerships with North American companies. Information should be accompanied by graphic material such as photographs of machinery, people and/or facilities.

Given the limited space, the selection of announcements and news for this section will be made by SME taking into consideration not only their editorial relevance but also a fair representation of the 15 Machines Italia sectors.
